Larry Rankin profile image

Larry Rankin is a sports analyst with an especially strong penchant for statistical breakdowns.

Installment 4 of our database includes states 24-37 in per capita ranking for production of NFL players to have had 10 or more sacks in an NFL season, as well as all players to accomplish this feat that were born in Washington, DC or non-U.S. countries.

For those of you wanting an overview of the findings or who are seeking another installment of this database, links can be found in the text box to your right.

For those of you interested in other state by state production rankings presented by Larry Rankin, they can be found by clicking the Larry Rankin profile in the upper right-hand corner or via links at the bottom of this page.

24. New York

Per Capita Score: 127

10 Sack Performances: 25

If someone told you there was a player who retired with 160 career sacks, 3rd most in NFL history, and 10 career 10 or more sack seasons, also 3rd in NFL history, wouldn’t you assume they were in the Hall of Fame?

The player I am talking about is Kevin Greene, and if you said yes, you’d be wrong. Defying all logic, Kevin Greene has yet to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, though he has been a finalist 3 times.

Obscure Stat: 157 of Kevin Greene’s career 160 sacks were made in seasons while he was listed as linebacker for his primary position, the most sacks for any linebacker over a career.

Obscure Stat: In all 10 seasons in which Kevin Greene had 10 sacks or more, his primary position was linebacker, an NFL record for someone at this position.

Obscure Stat: Bill Pickel spent the majority of his career as a dedicated nose guard, the hardest lineman positions to sack the QB from. His 56.0 career sacks are the most for any nose guard.

Obscure Stat: Nose guards have had 10 or more sacks 5 times in the history of the NFL. Bill Pickel is responsible for 3 of these performances, the most for any nose guard.

Obscure Stat: Bill Pickel had 12.5 sacks in both the 1984 and 1985 seasons, the most for any nose guard in a single season.

Dubious Distinction: Of all of Kevin Greene’s phenomenal accomplishments, there is one he’d probably rather forget. With one other player, Greene is the only pass rusher to have 10 or more sacks in a season and only record 18 total tackles.

26. Illinois

Per Capita Score: 116

10 Sack Performances: 15

Simeon Rice was a force to be reckoned with at defensive end. His 122 career sacks and 8 career 10 or more sack seasons are not NFL records, but certainly put him in elite company.

Will Rice ever get into the Hall of Fame? It is hard to say, but one would think he’d eventually get consideration.

As with so many players, a good part of Doug Betters’ career was spent playing before the sack was an official stat. How many sacks would he have had? It is hard to say. But for 2 seasons Betters was among the best pass rushers in the NFL.

Wisconsin born players haven’t accounted for many 10 or more sack seasons thus far. But Wisconsin does have J.J. Watt, a young defensive end who stands 6’6” inches tall and weighs in at 290 lbs.

Assuming he stays healthy and continues to play at a high level, Wisconsin will likely be climbing our per capita list in the foreseeable future.

Karl Mecklenburg played for the dominant Bronco teams of the 1980’s and was at the heart of the defense. Mecklenburg has been a Hall of Fame finalist on 3 occasions.

Though he only had more than 10 sacks on one occasion, he accomplished this from the inside linebacker position rather than the outside linebacker position. What is the significance of this? The author of this work hasn’t confirmed it officially, but he believes Mecklenburg to be the only LB in NFL history to accomplish this feat from an interior LB position.

Though Washington, DC is part of the U.S., it is affiliated with no specific state. As a result, players born in DC do not contribute to our state rankings.

Of note from DC is Shawne Merriman, who at the beginning of his career seemed poised to be one of the greatest pass rushers of all time, but as with so many great players, continued injuries would hamper his effectiveness and eventually end his career.

There have been a number of players over the years from the territory of American Samoa to make an NFL squad. This is impressive considering the minuscule island is populated by less than 60,000 people.

Al Noga’s 11.5 sacks in 1989 marks the only time a Samoa born player would exceed the 10 sack mark in NFL history.
